Oprah Winfrey has struggled with her weight publicly since the late 1980’s but one program she has always believed in is Weight Watchers. Ranked the top three weight loss programs in the United States which also includes Jenny Craig and Nutrisystem, Weight Watchers believes in no limitations but assigning point values to all food and giving you a point count for the day. Hundreds of celebrities have endorsed it throughout the years and now Oprah Winfrey has joined the party.
This week Oprah and Weight Watchers announced that Oprah acquired a 10% stake share in the company with the option for an additional 5% down the line. She also joined the Weight Watchers board as well. The acquisition saw Weight Watcher’s stock spike by 105% closing out at $13.92 on Monday. Weight Watchers had been struggling stock-wise in 2015, losing 73% of its value. Winfrey made the following statement:
“Weight Watchers has given me the tools to begin to make the lasting shift that I and so many of us who are struggling with weight have longed for. I believe in the program so much I decided to invest in the company and partner in its evolution.”
Industry insiders expect Oprah to help transform the brand which has been struggling to stay relevant over the past few years. With her media presence and charisma paired with her marketing know-how, we have a sneaking suspicion she will be making some big changes with the company over the next few years.
