The beaches of Oak Island, NC cautiously reopened on Monday after a weekend ravaged by freak shark attacks that resulted in two swimmers losing their limbs. The first attack happened on Sunday, when a 12-year old girl lost her arm below the elbow to a shark while she was swimming in waist-deep water. The second attack occurred only an hour later and two miles from the first attack where 16-year old boy was savagely attacked and lost his arm. He was only 20 yards from the shore according to local law enforcement.
Shark experts have weighed in on the extremely rare attacks and have stated that the best course of action is to close the beaches to prevent further injuries. Local law enforcement admitted on Monday that they didn’t respond as quick and efficiently as they could have with closing down the beaches and warning swimmers of the potential danger. It also has been brought to the attention of local authorities there were not enough lifeguards on duty to handle the amount of swimmers that were in the water on Sunday.
While shark attack are extremely uncommon, warmer waters and changes in the tide have brought them closer to shore. As of now, both victims are in critical condition but are expected to make a full recovery.
