In a cry of public outrage, liberals and Democrats across the nation were shocked when the House of Representatives voted to freeze federal funding of Planned Parenthood due to the increasing tension surrounding the use of fetal tissue by the organization. The vote was 241-187 and included all Republicans and two Democrats. The proposal would freeze federal funding for one year so an investigation could be launched into the potential illegal activity of Planned Parenthood.

Another proposal was also passed that would increase the restrictions on abortion doctors, this passed in a vote of 248-177. Planned Parenthood released the following statement regarding the vote:

“Millions of Americans rely on Planned Parenthood for birth control, lifesaving cancer screenings, and other critical preventive care, and nothing that politicians in Congress did today will change the fact that our doors remain open to everyone, in every part of this country, who needs high-quality, compassionate reproductive health care.”

This is the first time that a plan to defund Planned Parenthood has legally passed in the House. The pressure on the Republicans side to push this through has all come from the looming threat of a government shutdown, the second in two years. Over 32 republicans in the House have stated they will not approve a spending bill funding Planned Parenthood moving forward.

According to the Democrats, they believe this entire action is paving the way for the House to once again shut down the government in an effort to put pressure on the Democrats to defund Planned Parenthood. As of now, no expects the bill to pass or get any further traction.
