Gap refers to the generation gap between adults and kids.

Orientating out of the San Francisco, the first Gap store opened in 1969 with the goal of selling good jeans. The name referred to the growing differences between children and adults, called "the generation gap," a popular term that was reaching its peak in the late 1960s in light of the hippie movement.
