Freddie Prinze Jr. was only six months into culinary school when he booked his first acting gig resulting in the actor abandoning his dreams of opening a restaurant to becoming one of the biggest teen heart throbs in the 1990’s. As you may remember, Freddie Prinze. Jr. starred in the likes of I Know What You Did Last Summer and two Scooby-Doo films before slowly transitioning out of acting.
Now, the father of two who’s married to actress Sarah Michelle Gellar, is back in the kitchen and releasing his first cookbook, something he told PEOPLE magazine was a “natural progression.”
“We cook about 3 to 5 nights a week. So we spend a lot of time in the kitchen…actually the main thing we looked for when we were buying a house was an open, family kitchen. When we found that, the rest of the house, which we love, was sort of irrelevant because we were like, we have this room and we can all be together. That was a big thing for us.”
The book, titled “Back to the Kitchen” comes out on June 7, and is filled with over 75 recipes from Prinze Jr.’s New Mexican roots and Puerto Rican heritage. Most of them are healthy with one or two like fried lobster tacos and fried chicken being the exception. Prinze Jr. explained he tries to cook with less than ten ingredients and healthy for his kids, therefore the cookbook is a reflection of those eating habits.
The actor, who’s now 39, believes returning cooking is just his life coming full circle and he believes that if he never went to acting he’d probably own a restaurant. Hey, never say never we say.
