This week the world has been reeling over the death of beloved Cecil the Lion after he was shot and killed for sport by an American dentist on safari in Zimbabwe. The dentist in question–Walter James Palmer runs his business practice in Minnesota and has now been targeted by the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force. The local government has discovered that the dentist paid two trackers 55,000 in order to slay the lion who is well known in the community has been tracked by the local university for over 13 years.

Details surrounding what transpired are still coming together but it’s believed that Cecil was lured off of the national preserve by a piece of raw meat since it’s illegal to hunt in the park. He was then shot with a bow and arrow and followed for over 40 hours before being shot, beheaded and skinned. Of course, this has spawned outrage around the world with celebrities and animal rights activists chiming in. Palmer’s business has also needed to be shut down due to protests. Palmer issued the following “apology” through his publicist:

“I had no idea that the lion I took was a known, local favorite, was collared and part of a study until the end of the hunt.I deeply regret that my pursuit of an activity I love and practice responsibly and legally resulted in the taking of this lion.”

Currently, Palmer is in hiding and has stated he will cooperate with the Zimbabwe government. We shall see how the story continues to unfold.
